It appears that the #Dutch have #banned #glyophosate, the #herbicide in #Monsanto's #roundup #poison, and other countries may follow suit including #France, #Brazil and the #EU:

The dominoes are starting to fall. The evidence damning glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, the #world’s number one herbicide for #weed #control, has become too enormous to ignore.

While it won’t #kill you immediately as demonstrated by foolish Monsanto reps who have been known to drink Roundup in product demonstrations to convince unwitting farmers to use it, the long term effects to #health are nothing short of devastating. Infertility

Kidney disease Birth defects Severe gastrointestinal ailments Parkinson’s Disease Cancer Nervous system damage And the list goes on.

Finally, governments around the world are starting to take action, with the Dutch Parliament in recent days voting to ban all glyphosate-based herbicides including Roundup, from the end of 2015 and beyond.

.Wolfgang Streeck: the German economist calling time on capitalism - The Gardian

The political economist on Trump’s election, why we should be happy about Brexit and the crises facing western democracy.

“Before capitalism will go to hell, it will for the foreseeable future hang in limbo, dead or about to die from an overdose of itself but still very much around, as nobody will have the power to move its decaying body out of the way.” (...)

Why should the new oligarchs be interested in their countries’ future productive capacities and present democratic stability if, apparently, they can be rich without it, processing back and forth the synthetic money produced for them at no cost by a central bank for which the sky is the limit, at each stage diverting from it hefty fees and unprecedented salaries, bonuses, and profits as long as it is forthcoming – and then leave their country to its remaining devices and withdraw to some privately owned island? (...)

Eight years after Lehman Brothers keeled over and nearly took the entire banking system down with it, capitalism remains broken. British workers are suffering their most severe pay squeeze in at least seven decades. And even though politicians and the policymakers have pulled on every lever – cuts, investment, housing boom, hundreds of billions pumped into the markets – still the engine refuses to purr. The failure is international: the Bank of International Settlements, the central banks’ central bank, warned a few months ago that “the global economy seems unable to return to sustainable and balanced growth”. (...)

He sees the support for Brexit and Trump as stemming from the same source. “You have a growing group of all people, who, under the impact of neoliberal internationalisation, have become increasingly excluded from the mainstream of their society. (...)

But doesn’t he want something better than a new dark ages for his grandchildren? “If I am honest, now I am thankful for every passing year that is good and peaceful. And I hope for another one. Very short-term, I know, but those are my horizons.”

Italy referendum result could send shockwaves through EU

THE EU’s days might be numbered with Italy about to vote on a referendum which could send shockwaves across the continent.

Obrázek/fotografie

Analysts believe the outcome of the #ballot on constitutional #reform could have massive #global implications. Ana Thaker, a market economist at PhillipCapital said the #Italian result could be as "significant as #Brexit”.

With many #European leaders already coming under severe pressure from #anti-EU parties ahead of #elections next year the significance of the Italian result is huge.

Defeat for Italian Prime Minister #MatteoRenzi could lead to even deeper social turmoil in countries already struggling with #austerity, #immigration problems and a growing #contempt for #Brussels.

Maria Paola Toschi, global market strategist at JP Morgan Asset Management told CNBC: "The upcoming Italian #referendum this December may create volatility across markets as the year draws to a close."

Ms Toschi said the referendum is widely considered as political test for #Italy and its leader Matteo #Renzi.

She said: "A victory for #Yes could reinforce the empowerment of the current coalition on an ambitious program of reforms.

"A victory of #No could open a period of uncertainty on the political stability of the current coalition that has been always strongly committed on reforms."

Mr Renzi has vowed to resign and abandon politics if the constitutional reforms were not passed and opponents appear to have seized on what they see as an #opportunity to oust him and press ahead with their own populist #anti-EU agendas.

Just days after the German government advised citizens to stock up on food and water, the Czech government has followed suit.

Europe is coming apart at the seams and there seems to be nothing that the governments can do about it. They’re giving fair warning: the citizens will be obligated to provide for their own needs.

The Greek crisis will flare up again. And why should it not?

With ongoing austerity and low demand, Greece was never going to manage any sort of growth or budget surplus.

Greece has ceased to make headlines. (...) there were fears that a crisis that had been steadily becoming more acute in the first half of 2015 could result in the single currency splintering.

That threat was removed by a deal that involved a humiliating climbdown by the Syriza-led government. Greece received a bailout, but with harsh conditions attached.

There were three obvious problems with that 2015 deal, which secured Greece its third bailout in five years. The first was that the new dose of austerity would make it more difficult for Greece to emerge from a slump just as severe as that which gripped the US in the 1930s. The second was that Greece’s creditors were making unrealistic assumptions for growth and deficit reduction. The third was that sooner or later the Greek crisis would flare up again. It was a case of when, not if. (...)

All that said, though, the first two predictions have come true. By last summer, Greece had suffered a five-year slump that was on a par with the damage caused to the US economy in the Great Depression. Yet the country’s creditors thought it was a good idea to suck even more demand out of the economy through spending cuts and tax increases. (...)

Unfortunately, lessons have not been learned. The 2015 bailout package assumes that Greece will run a budget surplus, once debt interest payments are excluded, of 3.5% of GDP year in and year out. The IMF, which now has a more realistic assessment of Greece than the commission or the ECB, says few countries have managed to sustain budget surpluses of this size, and that Greece could do so only by further cutting wages and pensions. The IMF also thinks “it is no longer tenable” to imagine that Greece can move from having one of the eurozone’s weakest productivity growth rates to the highest.

The IMF says that without debt relief, Greece’s debt could hit 250% of GDP by the middle of the century. Germany would prefer those discussions to be delayed until after its election in autumn next year. But the chances are that Greece will be back in the headlines before then.

NOT GOOD: Last month, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) volunteered to take a urine test to see if glyphosate - the cancer-linked weedkiller - is in their system. 48 MEPs from 13 different European Union countries participated in the test, and now the results are in. On average, the MEPs had 1.7 micrograms/liter of glyphosate in their urine, 17 times higher than the European drinking water norm (0.1 microgram/litre). This means that everyone tested was way above the limit for residues of pesticides in drinking water.

This does not bode well for the health of the world.

With our democracy on the line and our health and environmental standards up for negotiation -- it couldn’t be more vital for our MEPs to know exactly what they’ll have to decide on.
EU Commissioners say they're giving access to MEPs, but we know it's just not true. Share this infographic to make sure people all over Europe understand just how undemocratic this trade deal is.

EU plans to destroy net neutrality by allowing Internet fast lanes

A two-tier Internet will be created in Europe as the result of a late-night "compromise" between the European Commission, European Parliament and the EU Council.

The so-called "trilogue" meeting to reconcile the different positions of the three main EU institutions saw telecom companies gaining the right to offer "specialised services" on the Internet. These premium services will create a fast lane on the Internet and thus destroy net neutrality, which requires that equivalent traffic is treated in the same way.

At least one Spanish bank, Bankinter SA, the country’s seventh-largest lender by market value, has been paying some customers interest on mortgages by deducting that amount from the principal the borrower owes.

The problem is just one of many challenges caused by interest rates falling below zero, known as a negative interest rate. All over Europe, banks are being compelled to rebuild computer programs, update legal documents and redo spreadsheets to account for negative rates.

WSJ: Tumbling Interest Rates in Europe Leaves Some Banks Owing Money on Loans to Borrowers (Patricia Kowsmann)

Tumbling interest rates in Europe have put some banks in an inconceivable position: owing money on loans to borrowers. At least one Spanish bank, Bankinter SA, the country's seventh-largest lender by market value, has been paying some customers interest on mortgages by deducting that amount from the principal the borrower owes.
